St. Patrick’s Day Safety Tips

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! If you’re planning to go out and have some fun tonight, we’ve got some tips that will keep you safe while you’re celebrating the luck o’ the Irish, courtesy of the Reno Police Department.

Find a designated driver. Invite a friend who doesn’t drink to be DD. Offer to buy them dinner and enjoy the evening with you in exchange for getting everyone home safely.

Ride RTC or call a cab. The RTC will be running for free from 4 p.m. to midnight today only so you can get to and from your celebrations safely.

Don’t take your car if it’s not absolutely necessary. Hang out somewhere within walking distance of your home or make arrangements to crash at a friend’s place.

Use marked crosswalks and be sure you make eye contact with drivers. The rules of the road still apply this evening.

Pace your drinking and drink plenty of water. A good rule of thumb is a glass of water per alcoholic drink.

Don’t forget to eat a good meal, too! Eat before you go out and if you’re planning to drink all night eat something during the course of the evening, too.

Slow your vehicle speeds in downtown and midtown. There will be more pedestrians than usual tonight.

Never leave your drink unattended. If you have to, get a fresh drink when you return.

Designate a friend to keep an eye on you and do the same for them. If someone’s getting out of control, get them home or to a safe location where they can get control of themselves.

Be aware of pedestrians, especially downtown and in midtown.

May the luck of the Irish be with you!
