pgoraft_two-5084722-1005961Project Great Outdoors has announced volunteer training dates for its 2015 Whitewater Program. The group is a non-profit organization that guides youth towards broader perspectives and self-discovery through adventures in the great outdoors.

Whitewater volunteers lead young boaters through the challenge of rapids and the adventure of team-building and self-discovery on the American River.

The dates for training are May 2 and 3 followed by a nine-day session, May 9 through 17.

“Due to our gracious individual and corporate donors we are able to offer this program to the right 15 individuals for free,” said Kurt Hoge, Whitewater Program Coordinator for Project GO. “Our training staff has more than 50 years in combined whitewater experience. Comparable training programs run from $600 to a much as $1,200.”

Training takes place at Camp Lotus on the South Fork of the American River. The 11-day program introduces the basics of navigating class III whitewater and includes expert instruction and all the required equipment. No previous whitewater experience is required.

Participants must be at least 18 years old and in good physical condition. There is no upper age limit. Upon completion, participants will be asked to serve as volunteer guides for Project GO’s Whitewater Program serving underserved youth
