crime-report-featuredimage1-7431997-7149222Of Interest: The 1976 murder charge against Cathy Woods for the murder of a University of Nevada, Reno nursing student was recently dismissed after extensive review and the discovery of DNA evidence. Woods was initially convicted, but filed a post-conviction petition in 2010 requesting examination of the evidence. A new trial was held to dismiss the charges.

March 1, 2015

A report of shots fired was reported in the area of Wedekind and Cannan Street. No bullet strikes were discovered and no injuries were reported.The investigation is ongoing.

A juvenile was arrested on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, domestic battery, DOP, and O&R on Brookdale Court.

March 2, 2015

Just after 8:30 a.m., a black adult male entered a convenience store in the 100 block of West Moana and simulated possession of a weapon before making off with an undisclosed amount of cash. Following that, he went to another convenience store in the 3000 block of South Virginia, but was unable to get away with anything. He then attempted to kidnap a female victim in a nearby apartment complex. Brandon Martin was arrested during a traffic stop for robbery, attempted robbery, attempted kidnapping, and open gross lewdness.

At 4:15 a.m., there was a robbery at 7-11 at 2295 G Street. The males, 15-21 years old, entered the store wearing hooded sweatshirts and masks. The subjects threatened the clerk on duty at the time before taking two cases of beer and leaving the store on foot. The clerk was able to identify one of the suspects, leading to the arrest of all three. Angel Ibarra and two other minor suspects were arrested on charges of robbery with a deadly weapon and minors in possession of alcohol. All weapons were recovered at the time of arrest.

The suspect in last week’s robbery and attempted kidnapping has been arrested

Niko Smith was arrested on charges of assault with a deadly weapon (firearm), ownership of a gun by a prohibited person, and discharging a gun from a vehicle on Baker Lane.

March 3, 2015

Luz Reyes-Galvan was last seen in October 2014. She is known to frequent local casinos. Anyone with information should call Sparks Police at 775-353-2225 or Secret Witness at 775-322-4900.

Michael Hetrick was arrested on charges of O&R and possession of drug paraphernalia on Broadway Blvd. after police were called to investigate a disturbance. The suspect resisted arrest and got physical with officers.

Three juveniles were arrested for O&R and trespassing at Whitfield and Wedekind Road after a neighbor reported the unknown subjects in a backyard. When police arrived, the suspects attempted to run, but were arrested and taken into custody.

Officers responded to a report of shots fired on Wedekind Road and discovered multiple bullet strikes. No injuries were reported and the investigation is ongoing.

March 4, 2015

Adam Mercado and Haley Mahoney were arrested for attempted burglary and PCS on Zinnia Drive. The suspects were reported to be breaking into a residence. On arrival, officers made contact with the suspects when they emerged from some bushes behind the victim’s house.

Aaron Walker was arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle on North Arlington Avenue after officers observed the stolen vehicle and made contact with the suspect.

March 6, 2015

Scott Hermens and Beth Deckard were arrested for narcotics offenses during a sting operation. Following a high speed chase, Deckard and Hermens were caught in the parking lot of the Damonte Ranch Walmart and taken into custody.

March 7, 2015

A report was made around 10:20 p.m. about a male who had been beaten and robbed in the 2200 block of Greenbrae. The victim was lured by the suspects to help them jump start their supposedly stalled vehicle. The suspects released their dogs to attack the victim, allowing them to steal the victim’s wallet, cell phone, and car keys. Jasmine Sanchez and Debra Griffin were arrested on charges of armed robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery. Bail was posted at $60,000 each and there are no other outstanding suspects.

Around 4:30 a.m., officers received multiple reports of shots being fired in the area around University Ridge Park. Shortly after the reports, two gunshot victims arrived at the hospital for treatment of their injuries — one victim was treated and released, the other remains in the hospital. The victims are believed to have been involved in an altercation at a park. The incident is believed to be gang related.
