February hikes at Washoe Lake State Park

If this weather keeps up, we’ll be able to hike year-round in Northern Nevada. And with so much beautiful wilderness to be explored, it might not be such a bad thing. Washoe Lake State Park will be putting on its best and brightest during the month of February and is offering a series of ranger-led hikes throughout the month, giving locals and tourists alike the opportunity to learn more about this unique state park. Passport books will be available for visitors to get stamped.

Full Moon Hike to Deadman’s Creek — This is a one-mile round-trip hike to the gazebo at the top of Deadman’s Creek during the full moon. Please dress warmly and bring a hat, coat, gloves, flashlight, and good walking shoes for this moderately easy hike. There will be a discussion on the moon, and weather permitting, some planets and constellations will be visible. This hike is limited to 30 participants and reservations are required. Please call (775) 687-4319 or e-mail [email protected] to make reservations. Leave your name, phone number, and number of people in your party. We will call back to confirm reservations. Dogs are not allowed on this hike.

WHEN: Tuesday, February 3, at 6:00 p.m.

WHERE: Meet at the Overflow parking lot – after entering the park, turn left, and it is the first parking lot on the right

North Ramp Dunes Hike

This is a moderately easy 1.5-mile round-trip hike through the sand dunes on the north east side of Washoe Lake. Please dress warmly and bring a hat, coat, gloves, and good walking shoes, as the trail may be sandy, muddy, or snow-covered. We will talk about the history of the park and the Washoe Valley.

WHEN: Sunday, February 15, at 1:00 p.m.

WHERE: Meet at the North Boat Ramp, located off of Lakeshore Drive. This is the north entrance of Washoe Lake State Park.

Dune Trek and Beach Stroll

This hike is approximately two miles long and is moderately easy. Please dress warmly, bring a hat, coat, water, gloves, and a camera. Participants should wear good walking/hiking shoes, as the trail will be sandy or snow-covered in some areas. We will be looking at a variety of plants and wildlife. The Dune Trek Trail offers some great views of Washoe Valley and Slide Mountain.

WHEN: Saturday, February 28, at 10:00 a.m.

WHERE: Meet at the equestrian parking area – after entering the park, turn right, pass the campground, and it is the gravel parking lot next to the pavilion

Note: All hikes are free, but there is a $7 entrance fee per vehicle into the park.
