Ronald McDonald house accepting scholarship applications from students

Date:

may-2014-rmhc-awards-ceremony-555x370-5856721-7202879Ronald McDonald House Charities® Northern Nevada (RMHC® Northern Nevada), a local non-profit that houses families of children in area hospitals, will open the application period for its RMHC® U.S. Scholarship Program on Oct. 1, 2014. Graduating high school students from northern Nevada with a grade point average above 2.7 are encouraged to visit www.rmhc-reno.org to apply before the Jan. 20, 2015, deadline.

This marks the fifteenth year of the RMHC® U.S. Scholarship Program. Recipients will be selected through a scoring system that assesses academic achievement, financial need, community involvement and a personal essay. Recipients will be notified in April of 2015.

“Our review committee takes into account more than just a student’s grade point average,” said RMHC® Northern Nevada executive director Marty Ozer. “We know the high cost of college keeps many students from earning the education they want. By weighing the varied criteria together, we hope to give as many students a fair chance at that education as possible.”

The RMHC® U.S. Scholarship Program passed a major milestone at the close of August after mailing 112 scholarship checks (including renewed scholarships) from its 2013-2014 scholarship period. The checks signified more than $1 million in scholarship dollars awarded to 651 recipients since 2000.

The RMHC® U.S. Scholarship Program is comprised of multiple RMHC® homes across the United States that raise funds for students pursuing college educations. In northern Nevada, funds are donated by individuals, companies and entities and matched by RMHC® Global for every dollar raised up to $18,500, making it one of the largest scholarship programs in the area in terms of number of scholarships awarded each year.

“Everyone deserves the chance to earn an education,” said Ozer. “Because of our incredible donors, volunteers and supporters, the RMHC® U.S. Scholarship Program is able to offer that to more students.”
