Reid Announces Over $1.8 Million To Protect Northern Nevada’s Water Supply

Date:

tir-small1-1628255-7824554Washington, D.C. – Nevada Senator Harry Reid today announced that the National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded $1,841,833 million to the University of Nevada, Reno.  This grant will be used to develop a framework for water management and supply within the Truckee – Carson River System.

“With yet another year of drought,  Northern Nevada needs the tools to better predict and protect its water supplies,” said Senator Reid. “The framework that will be put in place, thanks to a grant from the National Science Foundation, will help Nevada deal with the ongoing drought and the impacts of climate change.  Nevada is seeing record high temperatures and extreme and exceptional drought conditions throughout the state.  There is a great need to better manage and conserve our limited water supplies, and the NSF’s assistance will help empower Northern Nevada to do so.”

According to the National Science Foundation, the “Water Sustainability in Snow-Fed Arid Land River System” project will build a framework to engage diverse groups across Nevada, including two federally recognized American Indian tribes, as well as other Federal, State, and local resource managers and policy makers on the issue of water management and supply.  The framework will help predict how well the Truckee-Carson River System will handle future weather events, and help develop creative policies to adapt water management to fit the changing weather patterns.  With all facets of the program working together it can transform water management in Northern Nevada.
