SAINT MARY’S NEWS RELEASE

chaplain-bill-300x268-8255276-3621903Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center recently welcomed hospital chaplain Reverend William R. Greaver III to the organization. Greaver will serve as one of several chaplains and student intern chaplains providing services to patients and their families.

Additionally, Greaver will assist in leading a new project to bring Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) to northern Nevada. CPE will give seminarians and local clergy from diverse religious and denominational backgrounds the opportunity to learn the art of chaplaincy. This education will enhance their skills in spiritual care giving as well as help them fulfill the requirements to become board-certified chaplains. Currently, Saint Mary’s will be the only hospital in Nevada to offer a CPE program.

Before coming to northern Nevada, Greaver worked for the Franciscan Health System, a FIVE hospital system in northwest Washington. Greaver assisted in training chaplains at all five hospitals, FHS’s Hospice House and three area homeless programs.

Prior to his work in Washington he was a reservist with the United States Air Force in Grand Forks, N.D., where he ministered in multiple religiously diverse settings enriching active duty members, civilian personnel and their families. Additionally, he worked for St. Dysmas of South Dakota providing chaplaincy to three state prisons, a state penitentiary and a federal prison where he provided ministry for inmates, led worship, administered counseling programs and was a member of the Secretary of the Department of Correction’s Chaplain Advisory Committee.

Greaver is a member of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) and has over 25 years of ministry and social work experience. He received his masters of divinity at the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago and studied social work, psychology and philosophy at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn. He is currently a member of the National Association of Congregational Christian Churches.

Saint Mary’s will begin offering CPE to the community in early February. The program will be introduced based on the standards of ACPE. ACPE is a multi-cultural, multi-faith organization devoted to providing education and improving the quality of ministry and pastoral care offered by spiritual caregivers of all faiths through the clinical educational methods of CPE. CPE is offered in many kinds of settings including hospitals, hospice facilities, psychiatric and community care organizations, workplace settings, geriatric and rehabilitation centers and congregational and parish-based settings.
