Date:

image001-8713530-5071994With the loss to BYU, Nevada ended the season at 4-8 on the year, with a 3-5 record in the Mountain West … The program’s all-time record moved to 521-454-34 … Brian Polian is 4-8 as a head coach.

 STARTERS

  • Senior Jake Peppard (DE) started his first career game in his final career game.
  • Connor Talbott and Fred Lavulo started at guard with Jeremy Macauley nursing an injury.
  • Nevada opened in a two-tight end set with Jarred Gipson and senior Stephen Jeffers.
  • Gabe Lee (LB) made his first career start.

PUNTING MARK

Senior Chase Tenpenny put the wraps on one of the top punting seasons in school history and a splendid two-year career but setting the school record for career punting average at 43.9 yards per punt. On Saturday, he had five punts for 236 yards – an average of 47.2 – with a long of 55. His season average finished at 44.5 yards per punt – the fourth-best season average in school history.

WIM STREAK

Brandon Wimberly caught a 19-yard pass from Colin Kaepernick against Notre Dame on Sept. 5, 2009 for his first collegiate reception in his first career game for the Wolf Pack.  And he’s caught a pass in every game he has played in since, a stretch of 52 straight games that is more than any other player in conference history. He completed the streak on Saturday with 10 catches for 117 yards. The streak would be the Mountain West record but the league only recognizes games played by Wimberly with Nevada as a member of the MW (Wimberly’s first two seasons came with Nevada in the WAC). The Mountain West record for consecutive games with a reception is 47, held by UNLV’s Casey Flair and Wyoming’s Jovon Bouknight.

Wimberly missed all of the 2011 season due to injury but his (first) senior season in 2012 saw a remarkable comeback from the 6-foot-3, 225-pounder. Wimberly led Nevada in catches (70) and yards (845) and was second (behind current New England Patriots TE Zach Sudfeld) in touchdowns (4). Wimberly received a medical hardship from the NCAA in the offseason to return for a sixth season.

The NCAA record is 54 games by Bryan Anderson of Central Michigan (2006-09).

WIM 3K

Wimberly caught 10 passes for 117 yards, which gave him 261 receptions for 3,049 yards in his career.

He is just the seventh player in Nevada history to record more than 3,000 receiving yards. His 261 receptions ranks third all-time at the school. His 3,049 yards ranks sixth.

For the season, Wimberly had 97 catches, which is the seventh-best single-season in school history. He finished 11 yards shy of the 1,000-yard mark for receiving yards for the season.

EXTRA POINTS

BYU won the toss and elected to defer to the second half while Nevada received the opening kickoff … Joel Bitonio started his 38th consecutive game (longest streak on the team) and Brandon Wimberly started his 48th game (most overall on the team) … Nevada pitched a shutout in the first half, which, combined with the second half of the SJSU game, marked four straight scoreless quarters … Cody Fajardo moved past Chris Vargas for fifth place in career completions at 639.
