County to donate Christmas trees to local foster families

Date:

WASHOE COUNTY MEDIA ADVISORY

washoe-150x150-9656769-5528890In early December, Washoe County park rangers will be harvesting approximately 100 trees from Galena Creek Regional Park and donating them to local foster families for the holidays. These trees were initially scheduled to be removed from the park in mid 2014 as part of a larger fuels reduction plan. However, staff quickly realized that many of the smaller white fir trees would make wonderful holiday trees and offered to cut and donate them to foster families.

Park rangers have been working with Washoe County Social Services to get notice of the tree donation program to the 189 contracted foster families within Washoe County. The trees will be cut Dec. 3 and distributed to foster families Saturday, Dec. 7, at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park.

During the event, the Nevada Division of Forestry will be on-hand with a fire crew and special guest Smokey the Bear. Foster families will also be able to enjoy free admission to the Wilbur D. May Museum that day. Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful will offer free Christmas tree recycling to these families after the event.
