Fleischmann Planetarium hosts stellar lineup of Full-dome digital shows through Sept. 2, 2013

As a science education resource, many of the Planetarium’s entertaining shows also correlate with Nevada Department of Education Science Standards. Full-dome digital planetarium shows are open to all ages. Show admission is FREE for Planetarium members; museum admission is FREE for all. Two Small Pieces of Glass and Universe, a special two-film showing, includes the full-dome digital planetarium show Two Small Pieces of Glass, offering a stunning historical chronicle — from Galileo’s simple telescope developed 400 years ago to the latest discoveries in space — including interviews with the world’s leading astrophysicists. The accompanying show Universe presents a vision of the sky through the ages, and more recently through the eyes of science, including ancient sites where our ancestors built great structures with special astronomical significance.

With amazing sound effects by George Lucas’ Skywalker Sound, the Starship Intrepid travels through hyperspace in Attack of the Space Pirates, where you and its crew will put real science into science fiction and solve numerous challenges along the way. Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd’s legendary rock masterpiece, is presented in a full-dome music and light show by Starlight Productions with stunning HD animation and mind-blowing surround sound! Please note: mature lyrics/themes.

What’s happening in the sky this month? The SkyTonight Star Talk with staff and guest astronomers at the Fleischmann Planetarium answers that question in an informal and entertaining immersive multimedia presentation aided by state-of-the-art technology. The talk at the Planetarium on campus is followed by free telescope viewing (weather permitting) at the MacLean Observatory on the Redfield Campus in south Reno.

FREE telescope viewing every Friday at Redfield Campus! The Fleischmann Planetarium now hosts FREE telescope viewing EVERY Friday, after dark (weather permitting) at the MacLean Observatory on the Redfield Campus at 18600 Wedge Parkway, Reno, NV 89511 (in south Reno off the Mount Rose Highway).

Fleischmann Planetarium and Science Center is open every day; hours change seasonally. Summer 2013 hours are: Sunday-Thursday, 10 a.m.-7 p.m., and Friday-Saturday till 9 p.m. Admission is free to the Planetarium museum exhibits and Science Store. Built in 1964, the Fleischmann Planetarium and Science Center on the University of Nevada, Reno campus was the first planetarium in the world to project full-dome movies, and is currently one of the first of a handful of planetariums around the world to utilize the Spitz SciDome digital projector, a high-resolution, state-of-the-art immersive visualization tool. The projector is also adaptable to a number of disciplines and uses, supporting collaborations among the planetarium, other University departments and programs, and community organizations. The planetarium’s uniquely shaped building was designed by famed Reno architect Ray Hellman and is listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings. Fleischmann Planetarium serves more than 40,000 visitors a year, including hundreds of school field trips that introduce students, K-12, to the wonders of the universe.
