WASHOE COUNTY NEWS RELEASE

washoe-150x150-1362530-7870312The Washoe County Board of Commissioners and Washoe County Manager Katy Simon have released the annual State of the County address which can be seen in its entirety online.

The county manager’s address includes a review of the past year and a look ahead to 2013-14, as well as interviews with each of the five commissioners regarding the recently adopted strategic objectives for the Board of County Commissioners (BCC). These objectives include:

Sustainability of Washoe County’s financial, social and natural resources
Economic development and diversification
Safe, secure and healthy communities
Public participation and open, transparent communication
A valued, engaged employee workforce

“Despite the drastic reductions in the operating budget during the recession and the nearly 30 percent reductions in staff over the past five years, we’re cautiously optimistic about the future,” said Washoe County Chairman David Humke. “The economic trends look somewhat more promising and we’ve defined our five objectives to guide us through what we hope will be better times for all of us in Northern Nevada and throughout the country.”

The county manager also cites several new positive developments that have taken place throughout the region in the past year.

“It’s true that as far as economic trends, flat is the new up,” said Simon, “but we’ve also been able to accomplish some major goals, such as launching the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District, continuing our AA bond ratings and merging five departments in community services which will save approximately $1 million a year.”

Simon also said the county is looking forward to the development of the Apple Data Center and to stronger regional partnerships to increase effectiveness of services for citizens and economic development throughout the community.
