Australian Classical Guitarist Tommy Emmanuel Joins Artown’s Encore Line-Up

Date:

Tommy Emmanuel

Internationally acclaimed guitarist and entertainer Tommy Emmanuel comes to Reno as part of Artown’s Encore series for “An Evening with Tommy Emmanuel,” Thursday, Jan. 24 at 8 p.m. at John Ascuaga’s Nugget in Reno, Nev. Tickets are on sale for this special night with one of the world’s most impressive guitar players.

A household name across Australia and Europe, classical guitarist Tommy Emmanuel is one of Australia’s most respected musicians. Arguably the greatest living “finger-picker” in the world, his inventive and fearless music has a flawless sense of rhythm. Jim Ohlschmidt, editor at Acoustic Guitar Magazine stated, “I hesitate to refer to Tommy Emmanuel simply as a guitar player, because he is unquestionably one of the most gifted artists of our time.” With four platinum albums, three gold albums and several other prestigious awards, the Australian guitarist sets the standard for others to emulate. Rather than relying on a whole band for melody, rhythm, bass and drum parts, Tommy plays it all on one guitar simultaneously. Tommy moves effortlessly from folk to rock, jazz, country and blues with remarkable flair and unforgettable showmanship. Versatility has taken Tommy from international jazz festivals to special events at The Sydney Opera House and The Grand Ole Opry in Nashville to performances for the King of Thailand and the Australian Prime Minister.

Tickets are available online at janugget.com, by phone at 800-648-1177 or in person at the John Ascuaga’s Nugget box office. Friends of Artown, the festival’s individual donor program, can purchase tickets at a 10 percent discount with membership. Artown’s Encore is sponsored by FOX 11, IGT and Steinway Piano Gallery of Reno.

In anticipation of the Jan. 24 performance, KNPB Channel 5 Public Broadcasting is airing the PBS special “Tommy Emmanuel: Center Stage,” Dec. 3, 2012, 8 p.m. The 90-minute show takes Tommy center stage for a dazzling performance. The special showcases his unforgettable showmanship, flawless guitar skills and wide-ranging repertoire.
