Reno Police Department announces loss

Date:

CITY OF RENO NEWS RELEASE

On Saturday, July 21, the Reno Police Department lost a family member, Officer Scott Heglar.

Scott succumbed from injuries sustained in a July 11 motorcycle accident on Interstate 84 in Idaho.

Scott spent eight years dedicating himself to the Reno Police Department organization and our community. “Scott’s mark on our organization and the relationships he formed will forever be a part of the RPD history, and his service to the community will be remembered as the people we serve always find a special place in their hearts for those who selflessly protect their freedoms,” advised Deputy Chief Dave Evans.

Reno Police officers will wear the mourning band on their badges to honor Scott’s service. A team of officers will also escort Scott and his family back to Reno. A date for services has not been finalized. The Reno Police Department along with the Reno Police Protective Association will continue to assist the Heglar family to ensure his parents, wife and children get whatever help they need as they navigate through these difficult times.

“I would ask that your thoughts and prayers go out to Scott’s family and close friends,” said Chief Steve Pitts. “Law enforcement is a dangerous profession and provides many risks and challenges for those serving, but we must remember life is tenuous and also provides the same risks and challenges. For those you love and care about, take the time to remind them everyday, for we never know what tomorrow may bring.”
