NAIOP plans ‘Adopt a Geezer’ golf event July 24

NAIOP NEWS RELEASE

The Developing Leaders (DL) group of the NAIOP Northern Nevada chapter has announced plans to hold an “Adopt a Geezer” golf event July 24 at Reno’s Lakeridge Golf Course. While the name may imply that it is an affair for geriatric players perhaps using walkers or canes… it’s definitely not!  Rather it’s the DL’s chance to test the theory that “you never know who can teach whom.”

The Adopt a Geezer event will be nine holes of golf and feature foursomes that will consist of two DL members, young professionals 35 years of age or younger, and two “mature, experienced professionals” who are in commercial real estate or a supporting industry. Typically this DL group has a monthly mixer during which an experienced industry or community leader is asked to speak about business and life experiences that have made a difference in their professional lives. It is hoped that the golf event will somewhat reverse the theory and get some teaching going both ways.

“We thought it would be fun to have the educational process go both ways as our young professionals are some of the most connected and savvy out there. Today you have to use all communication platforms available, both online and off, to grow your business,” said Chris Fairchild, broker at Avison Young and NAIOP’s Developing Leaders 2012 Chair.  “Social media is just the tip of the information iceberg about which we can educate our older, potentially less connected members.

“Commercial real estate spans the generations, and our Developing Leaders group is NAIOP’s attempt to ensure we have an effective mentoring platform that will support continued growth and professionalism in our industry,” explained Mike Perkins of MTK Ltd.,who is the NAIOP 2012 president. “With this event our DL members will have the opportunity to make real connections with leaders who can possibly provide invaluable long-term mentoring.” NAIOP officials said that if the event is well received they hope is to make it an annual affair.

Cost for the event is $15 for NAIOP members and $25 for non-members.

NAIOP of Northern Nevada has long been a resource for addressing the many complex issues and challenges in commercial real estate with online forums, formal training classes and regional presentations designed to answer the questions and support the success of its commercial real estate professionals.
