Stefan Humphries, M.D., MBA, brings years of medical and administrative experience to Renown Health. Earlier this spring, he joined Renown Rehabilitation Hospital as medical director.

“The employees and medical staff at Renown Rehab will be working together to enhance the patient experience by promoting a seamless transition from acute hospital care to post-acute care,” Dr. Humphries said when asked about his main goals as the hospital’s medical director. “As post-acute care providers, we can better define medical necessity throughout the post acute continuum for referred patients, in an effort to provide the best care possible in an efficient and cost effective manner.”

Before moving to Reno, Dr. Humphries was the Medical Director of St. Luke’s Rehabilitation Institute in Spokane, Wash., for nearly seven years. Prior to that, he was the Medical Director of the Healthsouth Rehabilitation Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colo., for seven years.

Dr. Humphries earned his M.D. degree in 1993 from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver. He then completed his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., in 1998.

In 2008, he earned a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Washington’s Foster School of Business in Seattle. Earlier in his academic career, Dr. Humphries earned a bachelor’s degree in bioengineering from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

Before starting his medical career, Dr. Humphries was a professional football player. He was a member of the Chicago Bears for three years and the Denver Broncos for two years. He also played for the University of Michigan’s football team during his time there.

Dr. Humphries said he is now elated to be a part of Renown’s team and looks forward to continuing the strides made by Renown employees when it comes to quality patient care.

“Renown is certainly well known for its commitment to the patient experience,” Dr. Humphries said. “It’s a working environment that promotes creativity and innovation. Phenomenal patient experience will certainly be integrally important to Renown’s sustainable future as we continue to move forward with transformational health care initiatives.”
