Mackay Week, other UNR events coming up

The University of Nevada, Reno is featuring the following events next week:

5th Annual Hindu Baccalaureate Service – Sunday, April 15
5 p.m., Joe Crowley Student Union, Ballroom C
Organized by Universal Society of Hinduism in collaboration with the Indian Student Organization, the service will bless graduating class in the traditional Hindu style, complete with applying tilak (religious mark) on the foreheads of graduates. Besides keynote address by a distinguished Hindu monk from California, it will also include blessing prayers by Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, Jewish and Native American religious leaders. Well known musician Jim Eaglesmith will chant a kirtan number in Sanskrit with audience following him in the chant.

Mackay Week – Sunday, April 15-Thursday, April 19
Mackay Week, taking place at the end of each spring semester since 1913, is a celebration of one of the University’s largest supporters – John Mackay and his family. The week also celebrates Nevada’s history with the mining industry. Organized by the ASUN, this tradition proves to be a very good ending to another good academic year.
Mackay Week Events:
Sunday, April 15, 10 a.m.
Students will meet at the Joe Crowley Student Union Gateway Plaza for the annual Paint the “N” event.
Monday, April 16, 8 p.m.
Teams will serenade Mackay to start the week off right when they gather for the Ode to Mackay event in the Student Union Ballroom A, Fourth Floor.
Wednesday, April 18, 11 a.m.
Students will “saddle up” for a wild ride at the Student Union Gateway Plaza for Nevada Roundup, complete with line dancing and good, old-fashioned root beer floats.
Thursday, April 19, 1 p.m.
Students will enjoy Picnic Day at the Jot Travis lawn with food, fun and watching the crowning of Ma and Pa Mackay.

Earth Week 2012Tuesday, April 17- Friday, April 20
Educational programs and demonstrations during the University’s Earth Week will focus on sustainability efforts and examples of green campus and community resources, including a bicycle repair clinic, a dumpster dive and a water taste-test. Earth Week events will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Gateway Plaza in front of the Joe Crowley Student Union each of the first three days, with a similarly themed film playing each of those days at 6 p.m. in the Student Union. Friday’s GREENevada Student Sustainability Summit is in the Davidson Mathematics and Sciences Center.

Everything is Global Summit – Wednesday, April 18

8 a.m.-noon, Joe Crowley Student Union, Fourth Floor
The “Everything is Global” summit, hosted by the Northern Nevada International Center, brings together local and national experts in the fields of economics, commerce, international trade, social media and medicine. The summit was initiated through a seed grant from the National Council for International Visitors as part of its 50th Anniversary celebration. The Northern Nevada International Center is a driving force in promoting the concept of citizen diplomacy in northern Nevada.

Opening Reception for Amerique Powell: Two Cats in Real Life, or Cattitude – Thursday, April 19

Opening Lecture: 5:30-6:30 p.m., Church Fine Arts Building, Room 153; Reception: 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Exhibit open weekdays: April 16–27, Church Fine Arts Sheppard Gallery
Join the Sheppard Gallery as it presents Amerique Powell’s large-scale oil paintings that envision the ways in which her pet cats, Tin and Thomasino, experience the world around them. Dazzling color and bold patterns surround and envelop them, giving the viewer a glimpse of what their real lives might be like. This event is free and open to the public.
Gallery Hours: Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Friday 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Salsabration – Friday, April 20

The Center for Student Cultural Diversity recognizes and celebrates the achievements of Latino graduates during a program, followed by refreshments and live entertainment by Ritmo Ardiente.
