Highlights of March 13 County Commission meeting

The Washoe County Commission held its regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, March 13, and took action on items including the recognition of March 2012 as Social Work Month, the appointment of attorneys to the Law Library Board of Trustees and the appointment of the new Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District chief, the acceptance of grants and the award of bids for audit and technical support services.

Social Work Month. The County Commission recognized the month of March as National Social Work Month and commended social workers in the community for their hard work and dedication to the health and welfare of citizens in Washoe County.

Washoe County currently employs over 125 licensed professional social workers in a variety of roles including child protective services, adoption and foster care, senior services and more.

Grants. County commissioners accepted a grant for $5,850 from the Alliance with the Washoe County Medical Society to support the Kid’s Court / Ask an Inmate programs with the Second Judicial District Court. No county match was necessary for this grant.

Additionally, commissioners accepted funding in the amount of $35,000 from the Office of Traffic Safety to help support the coordinator position within the Felony DUI Court. The funding requires an in-kind match of $35,000 from the county.

Appointments. Commissioners voted 4 to 1, with Commissioner Jung dissenting, to formally appoint Charles Moore as the chief of the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District. Moore comes to the district with a strong record of success including 11 years experience as the fire chief for the Eagle River Fire Protection District in Eagle County, Colo.

Commissioners approved a 3-year agreement with Moore, with a starting salary of $126,500.

In addition, attorneys Lynne Simons and Clay Brust were appointed to the Law Library Board of Trustees by the County Commission at its Tuesday meeting. Simons and Brust will serve a two-year term from January 2012 to December 2013. The Law Library Board of Trustees is made up of two attorney members and two non-attorney members.

Audit services. Commissioners voted to approve the retention of Kafoury, Armstrong & Company for independent audit services for Washoe County, the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District and the Sierra Fire Protection District. The cost for this service is $182,000.

Independent audit serves provide essential oversight in preparation of the county’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report. In addition to the $158,500 for general audit services, Kafoury, Armstrong & Company will provide $23,500 in single audit services to comply with federal audit requirements in connection with stimulus grants.

Technical support. County commissioners awarded a bid for technical support services for county equipment to Computer Technical Services, Inc. (CTS) for a one-year term, with the provision for two successive annual options at a contracted rate of $27.50 per hour. The contract is estimated at $175,000 for the year.

CTS will provide supplemental support for technical services (personal computer installation and support, printer maintenance and help desk staffing) to employees of the county.
