Michael Hagerty named KUNR news director

Michael Hagerty has been named news director for KUNR 88.7 FM – Reno Public Radio. He comes to KUNR from his position as senior producer and news director for KNPB-TV Public Television in Reno, bringing to the job more than a decade of public radio and public television experience. He holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Abilene Christian University and has past experience at two University-based NPR member stations.

“Michael combines knowledge of local issues, a wealth of public broadcasting experience, broad technical skills and proven excellence in journalism,” said KUNR General Manager David Stipech. “We’re committed to offering an outstanding news service to our region, and Michael will do a great job leading our team.”

Before moving from Texas to join KNPB-TV in 2008, Hagerty worked for KACU/Abilene Public Radio as on-air host and news producer, followed by seven years at KWBU-TV/FM in Waco, serving as news and public affairs director. His work has been recognized with honors, awards and teaching opportunities, and he is active in the northern Nevada community. In his role with KNPB-TV, he worked frequently and closely with KUNR as guest-host of KUNR’s Beyond the Headlines, 2011 Nevada Legislature coverage, the 2011 Special Congressional Election Debate, plus other reporting.

Reno Public Radio is an NPR member station providing the region with local and national news, information, entertainment, music and other cultural and community programming. A listener-supported, nonprofit station, KUNR is licensed to the Board of Regents of the Nevada System of Higher Education, and has broadcast from the campus of the University of Nevada, Reno, since 1963.
