Basalite in Reno earns safety honor

SUBMITTED NEWS RELEASE

The Safety Consultation and Training Section (SCATS) of the State of Nevada’s Division of Industrial Relations has recognized Basalite, a concrete and masonry company, in Reno for its successful completion of the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP). This is the fourth time Basalite has received its SHARP certification.

The no-cost SHARP program is designed to assist employers with the development and implementation of effective safety and health programs. SHARP assists businesses to improve their return on investment, be in compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations and create added value of reducing their accident costs.

“Our number one priority prior to profits is the safety of our employees,” said Gordon Hinkel, General Manager for 28 years at Basalite. “I want our employees to show up healthy and go home to their families in the same condition. If I can achieve that, then I can work on having a quality product.

“The SHARP program allows us to partner with the experts and provide us with the advice to create a safe working environment for my employees,” Hinkel added.

Basalite has been in business since 1971 and has 67 employees between its three locations in northern Nevada, including a manufacturing facility in Carson City, aggregate quarry in Dayton and distribution yard in Reno. Basalite creates commercial and residential concrete products including materials to build offices, schools and warehouses. The company also supplies and installs pavers and wall blocks for home improvement projects.

Businesses interested in the SHARP program can contact SCATS at 775-824-4630. For more information on SCATS, or for a schedule of training courses offered at no charge by SCATS, call toll free 877-4SAFENV or visit www.4safenv.state.nv.us.
