United Way Of Northern Nevada and the Sierra seeks tax preparation volunteers

Date:

SUBMITTED NEWS RELEASE

United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra’s (UWNNS), “Earn It, Keep It, Save It,” partnership is looking for volunteers to assist in preparing tax returns in 2012 at various Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites throughout Northern Nevada. VITA sites provide free tax assistance to individuals and families earning less than $50,000 per year using trained, certified, volunteer tax preparers.

Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds are welcome and will receive tax training in cooperation with community partners and the IRS. Individuals with good computer skills are needed to assist in preparing and transmitting tax returns through the IRS E-file program.

Last year during the tax season, volunteer tax preparers helped more than 2,300 taxpayers receive approximately $3.4 million in Federal tax refunds. Included in that total was $891,000 in Earned Income Tax Credits, $602,000 in Child Tax Credits and $81,000 in Education Tax Credits.

“Increasing financial stability for all northern Nevada residents is a primary goal for UWNNS,” said Karen Barsell, CEO and President of UWNNS. “VITA sites are important in achieving that goal but cannot happen without volunteers.”

Volunteers can help in three ways:

  • Become a return preparer and help prepare tax returns
  • Become a site coordinator and prepare tax returns, as well as supervise and manage all aspects of the VITA site
  • Become a greeter and greets taxpayers while providing initial forms and answering general questions
