Businesses cited in underage drinking sting

Date:

SUBMITTED NEWS RELEASE

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office joined with the Department of Public Safety Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) and the Washoe County School District Police Department in an effort to eliminate the availability of alcohol to minors by conducting age verification compliance checks at 94 local businesses that sell alcoholic beverages throughout Washoe County. The Regional Task force visited 94 businesses. Of the 94 businesses, 26 businesses were issued citations for selling alcohol to a minor. Each citation holds a bail of $640. Fifteen Civil Infractions were issued to business owners from the Department of Taxation because their employees has either not attended the alcohol awareness training class or their certification had expired.

The Enforcing the Underage Drinking Laws (EUDL) Program supports and enhances efforts by states and local jurisdictions to prohibit the sale of alcoholic beverages to minors and the purchase and consumption of alcoholic beverages by minors (minors are defined as individuals less than 21 years of age). By limiting the availability of alcoholic beverages to minors, we will reduce alcohol related accidents and/or fatalities in our region.

The EUDL event was funded by a grant awarded by “Join Together Northern Nevada”. The three agencies conducted five operations – November 26th, December 2nd, December 9th, December 15th and December 23rd.

The team conducted business checks at the following locations: checking for business license issues, alcohol awareness training cards, work permits and checking the patrons for underage drinkers possessing false identification cards.
