Shorter, narrated version of the “Nutcracker” designed especially for families with young children

(CARSON CITY, Nev.) — The Sierra Nevada Ballet presents “Peanutcracker – the Story in a Nutshell”, on December 3 at 2:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center’s  Bob Boldrick Theater located at 851 East William Street.   “This shorter, 45 minute, narrated version of the Nutcracker is especially designed for families with young children”, said Artistic Director, Rosine Bena.  Bena wrote and choreographed this traditional holiday show.

The production features professional dancers and apprentices from the Sierra Nevada Ballet and over 60 young dance students from Western Nevada Performing Arts in Carson City and In Motion Studio in Reno, Nev.  Tickets can be purchased the day of the show and are $11 for adults and $6 for children.

For the second year in a row, performers from Strings in the Schools, under the direction of Sue Kitts Jesch, will provide free lobby music from 6:00 -7:00 pm prior to the Saturday evening dance performance.

Bena was first inspired to create this special production for families by young audience members.  She was a professional Ballerina who danced throughout the United States and Europe with the Stuttgart Ballet, the Washington Ballet and Peninsula Ballet Theatre. Bena danced leading roles in all the classics as well as contemporary works.

After 25 years of performing the role of the Sugar Plum Fairy professionally, Bena came to discover through speaking with young fans that the Nutcracker was often children’s first introduction to ballet and often very young children found the full two hour ballet too long and difficult to follow. Bena produced her first mini version of the Nutcracker with narration in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1993.  The short ballet with its growing Christmas tree and animated story telling proved to be very popular.

Bena continued to present this (as the Artistic Director of Perspectives Dance Theatre and The Reno Ballet) to audiences in the San Francisco Bay Area every year through December of 2000 until Rosine moved permanently to Nevada and started the professional ballet company, Sierra Nevada Ballet.

Sierra Nevada Ballet has presented “Peanutcracker – the Story in a Nutshell” to highly enthusiastic Northern Nevada audiences since 2002.
