The Altered Landscape: Photographs of a Changing Environment

September 24, 2011 – January 8, 2012

Celebrating the institution’s signature photography collection that examines human interaction and intervention with environments, The Altered Landscape represents a diversity of artists, including Edward Burtynsky, Fandra Chang, Stephane Courturier, Pipo Nguyen-duy, Otobong Nkanga, Amy Stein, and Kim Stringfellow.

Meet the Artist: Peter Goin on The Altered Landscape

Friday, December 2 / noon

Reno photographer Peter Goin was instrumental in the founding of the Museum’s most important collection, The Altered Landscape. Learn about the early development of this collection, and his own impressive work within it, from the artist himself.

FILM We Were Here, a Film by David Weissman

Saturday, December 3 / 2 pm

In recognition of World AIDS Day, and in collaboration with Northern Nevada Hopes, the Museum presents We Were Here, a film by David Weissman and the first documentary to look at the arrival and impact of AIDS in San Francisco. A portion of the proceeds from the screening of the film supports Northern Nevada Hopes and AIDS education and awareness in Nevada.

Meet the Artist: Raheleh Zomorrodinia on Art + Environment in Iran with Bozena Welborne

Friday, December 9 / noon

Iranian artist Raheleh Zomorrodinia has been exploring the intersections of art + environment since 2004, when she began participating in festivals of environmentally-oriented art festivals across Iran. Learn from Zomorrodinia about her cross-cultural experience as a photographer, and related political issues with Bozena Welborne, professor of political science.

Holiday Trunk Show with Kady Elson of Silver Creek Designs

Saturday, December 10 / noon – 3 pm

Based in rural Nevada, Elson creates unique, artisan jewelry inspired by the desert and surrounding mountains. Meet Elson and find the perfect gift.

TALK Black Rock Design Institute Presents Gary Hutton | Gary Hutton Design

Thursday, December 15 / 6 pm

Meet California-based interior and furniture designer Gary Hutton, who studied under Wayne Thiebaud, Robert Arneson, and Manuel Neri, and holds an honors degree in Environmental Design from California College of the Arts. Networking and social hour with beer provided by Silver Peak Brewery at 5 pm, lecture follows at 6 pm.

FILM Meet the Artist: Jim Denevan and a Special Screening of Art Hard

Saturday, December 17 / 2 pm

Land artist Jim Denevan—the creative force behind Outstanding in the Field—traveled thousands of miles to make an enormous drawing on the frozen surface of the world’s largest lake, Siberia’s Lake Baikal. Enduring sub-zero temperatures and blistering winds, five participants inscribed the ice with a series of circles based on the Fibonacci sequence to create what has been called the world’s largest drawing. Art Hard documents the creation of this monumental drawing. Special guest appearance by the artist.

Grab a beer, groove to the live music, and check out the galleries at First Thursday. First Thursday wine bar sponsored by Whispering Vine Wine Company. Sponsored annually by The X 100.1 FM Radio and Great Basin Brewing Company. Bottled water sponsored by Sam’s Club. Bring the kids for Kids Open Art Studio, available from 5 – 7 pm for $4 per child. First Thursday is free for Museum members or non-members with paid regular admission. $10 / $8 Seniors and students/ Free for Museum members.

Art Afternoon: Workshop & Social for Seniors

Friday, December 9 / 1 to 3 pm

Expand your interests with a docent-guided tour and studio art class. Light refreshments. No art background necessary. Cost for two sessions: $12 / $10 Museum members. Sponsored in part by the Leonette Foundation.
