The gala is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 15, and will be an evening filled with music and stories of miracles that occur daily at Renown Children’s Hospital. The program also includes the presentation of the Arthur J. Lurie M.D. Distinguished Physician Award, honoring Dr. Atcheson and the genuine difference his work has made in the community.

“We are delighted that Jim Atcheson is to receive the Arthur J. Lurie M.D. Distinguished Physician Award,” said former colleague Dr. Robert K. and Jean Myles. “This is a well earned tribute to his dedication to the practice of medicine in Nevada.”

A specialist in diabetes, endocrinology, metabolism and internal medicine, Atcheson was the first trained endocrinologist in northern Nevada and has been Board Certified in internal medicine since 1971 and Board Certified in endocrinology and metabolism since 1973. He has practiced medicine for more than 45 years and joined Renown Medical Group more than three years ago.

“We are pleased that Dr. Atcheson was selected by his colleagues for this significant recognition,” said Jim Miller, Renown Health president and chief executive officer. “He is very deserving of this honor.”

Atcheson is a Reno native. He was educated at the University of Nevada and attended medical school at the University of Utah. He completed a medical internship and residency at Washington University, St. Louis at the Saint Louis City Hospital and Barns-Jewish Hospital and was chief resident of medicine at the University of Utah’s College of Medicine. He also completed a two-year National Institute for Health fellowship in endocrinology at the University of Utah and has practiced in Reno since 1972.

People interested in attending Magic 2011 can contact the Renown Health Foundation at 775-982-5545. All proceeds from the event will benefit Renown Children’s Hospital.

The Arthur J. Lurie Distinguished Physician Award is given in memory of Arthur J. Lurie, M.D., a respected pioneer in cardiovascular surgery in the area. Dr. Lurie performed the first open heart surgery in northern Nevada at Renown Health in 1977.
