nmalogo-300x67-3577514-9934297The Nevada Museum of Art has released the following schedule of events for November. The museum is open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and open late on Thursdays until 8 p.m. It is closed Mondays, Tuesdays and national holidays.

Special Events

28th Annual Arts and Flowers Luncheon
Nov. 5/10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The Arts and Flowers Luncheon features more than 20 artisans offering handcrafted wares. Guests are invited to purchase a variety of distinctive, original creations in the artisan’s mall, bid on silent auction items and purchase raffle tickets for one of the holiday-themed baskets. All proceeds benefit the exhibition and education programs of the Nevada Museum of Art. Tickets are $45 per person/$450 table of 10. Space is limited; prepaid reservations are required and can be made online or at 329-3333, ext. 286.

Opening Talk: Dr. Cliff Ackley, Curator, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, on Rembrandt
Saturday, Nov. 7/6 p.m.
Curator of Prints and Drawings, Dr. Cliff Ackley, invites guests to consider the exquisite prints featured in Rembrandt: The Embrace of Darkness and Light. With his 43 years of experience in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Department of Prints and Drawings to guide us, the prints featured in the exhibition will come to life, illuminated by Dr. Ackley’s rich knowledge of their artistic and historical contexts. $12/$10 museum members. Film: Maynard Dixon: Art and Spirit
Thurs., Nov. 19/6 p.m.
Maynard Dixon’s remarkable life and career are documented in the extraordinary film Maynard Dixon: Art and Spirit. Recipient of the 2008 Western Writers Association Spur Award for “Best Western Documentary,” the film creates a rich and nuanced portrait of the famed western artist. Afterward, join Producer/Director Jayne McKay for a discussion of the film and Dixon’s life before taking a few moments to view the Dixon paintings on exhibit. $10/$8 museum members.

Rembrandt: The Embrace of Darkness and Light
Sun., Nov. 9
This exhibition celebrates the life and legacy of legendary Dutch etcher Rembrandt van Rijn. The extensive collection of Rembrandt’s etchings, drawn from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston is one of the finest collections of its kind in the United States, including 130 of Rembrandt’s most celebrated prints. Tracing the artist’s entire career as a printmaker from the drama and technical genius of his early productions to the quiet mystery and poetry of his final works, this exhibition demonstrates how Rembrandt cleverly captured life during the 17th century on small, etched copper plates.

Monsters and Maidens: Amphora Pottery of the Art Nouveau Era
Sat., Nov. 14
Between 1892 and 1918 the Amphora Pottery Company manufactured thousands of remarkably imaginative and delicately crafted ceramic vessels in its workshop in Teplitz, Austria. From snarling dragons and sea creatures to medieval maidens and lily pads, the wares of the Amphora pottery makers were influenced by artistic and literary movements ranging from Symbolism and Secessionism to Art Nouveau. This exhibition features 20 stunning examples of Amphora Pottery from the Southern California collection of Byron Vreeland.

First Thursday with The Brother Dan Band
Thurs., Nov. 5/5 to 7 p.m.
Come in from the cold and enjoy the melodies of The Brother Dan Band filled with heart-felt lyrics and fantastic harmonies. All Thursday night events are sponsored annually by KTHX Radio and Great Basin Brewing Company. First Thursday wine bar sponsored by Vintage Wine Shop and Tasting Bar. $10/$8 seniors and students; free for museum members.

Art Bite: Meet the Artist: Patricia Johanson on Petaluma Wetlands Park Project
Fri., Nov. 13/noon
Join Patricia Johanson for an intimate discussion of her Petaluma Wetlands Park project as she leads guests through the drawings and designs on display in the CA+E LAB. Balancing beautiful design with ecological sensitivity, Johanson’s work is considered one of the most dynamic and functional landscape architecture projects in recent years. This half-hour dialogue invites guests to experience an informal and intimate introduction to works in the galleries.

Art Afternoon: Workshop and Social for Seniors
Fri., Nov. 13/1 to 3 p.m.
Expand your interests with a docent-guided tour and studio art class. Explore different artworks throughout the museum. Then create an art project related to the tour in a classroom setting. Enjoy refreshments while socializing and making art. No studio experience is necessary. Cost for two sessions: $12/$10 museum members. To register, call 329-3333, ext. 260. KUNR Sunday Jazz Brunch with the Paul Roth Trio
Nov. 15/11 a.m to 1 p.m.
Catch a live jazz performance hosted by KUNR Radio and dine from the à la carte brunch menu from Café Musée. Prices range from $5 to $15.

hands/ON! Sunday Family Program
Sun., Nov.29 / Charcoal Dust Portraits
Families will view Rembrandt: The Embrace of Darkness and Light and create portraits inspired by the old master. Using charcoal and charcoal dust, explore making dramatic and mysterious portraits that have a strong sense of contrast. Bring the entire family for this free, fun program featuring hands-on art projects and gallery activities for all ages. Admission to hands/ON! is free. Sponsored by the City of Reno Arts and Culture Commission, the Mathewson CLAT #5, the Sato Foundation and Tahoe Creamery.

General Information
